After two years in Kampala, I can say with confidence, without hesitation, that Luzira is the best neighborhood in the city.
When I talk about Luzira, these are the streets that immediately come to mind:
- Tucker Crescent
- Lake Drive
- Malt Road
- Chorley Crescent Road
- Kabalega Crescent
Each of these streets represents what I consider the ideal residential environment. Together, they embody six key elements that, for me, define an outstanding neighborhood.
Safety
Luzira is one of the safest and most secure neighborhoods in Kampala. One of the strongest indicators of safety, in my opinion, is seeing women comfortably walking around at any time of the day. That sense of normalcy says a lot about a place.
In addition, CCTV cameras are installed throughout the neighborhood, making it difficult for criminal activity to thrive. The overall atmosphere is calm, organized, and reassuring.
Green Spaces and Walking Paths
All the streets mentioned above are characterized by well-preserved green spaces and pedestrian-friendly paths. Plants, trees, and flowers are not afterthoughts here; they are integrated into the architecture and identity of the neighborhood.
Considering the level of pollution and traffic congestion that can exist in Kampala, living in an area protected from excessive noise and pollution is invaluable. Traffic is relatively limited, making Luzira ideal for walking, jogging, or running. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, it is common to see residents exercising outdoors.
Dog owners particularly appreciate the neighborhood because of the spacious and calm environment, without the constant stress of cars and motorcycles. I even know a couple who moved from Kololo to Luzira specifically to provide a better environment for their dogs.

One of my favorite aspects of Luzira is the presence of vervet monkeys, especially around Lake Drive. Encountering them is always a pleasant surprise. Their continued presence is only possible because the neighborhood has preserved enough trees and greenery to provide them with a safe habitat as well.
Access to the Lake
Very few neighborhoods in Kampala have direct access to Lake Victoria, and Luzira is fortunate to be one of them.
There is something deeply calming about waking up every morning knowing that the lake is just nearby, not only to admire from a distance, but also to physically connect with. I cannot count the number of times I have stopped by the lakeshore simply to reflect, ground myself, or envision my future.
As science said, proximity to water is deeply calming for human wellbeing, and I can confirm it. I have a growing collection of sunset photographs taken from that very spot that I truly cherish.
Luzira is also home to Port Bell, an important port area where an immigration office operates. The landing site creates opportunities for vendors, fishermen, transport activities, and local commerce, while also giving the neighborhood a distinct character connected to travel and movement.

Markets and Local Commerce
Markets are essential to daily life, and Luzira is well served in that regard. The area has three main markets:
- Butabika Market
- Luzira Market
- Port Bell Market
My personal favorite is Port Bell Market because of its fish section, where fishermen sell their fresh catch of the day. Nearby, there are also several spots where you can enjoy grilled fish and a drink while overlooking the lake.
Like many Ugandan neighborhoods, Luzira also has designated “market days,” when vendors from different places come to sell their products. In Luzira, these market days take place every Monday and Thursday.
I personally enjoy buying sportswear and thrift clothing during those days, as many retailers offer affordable second-hand items.
Access to Public Facilities and Amenities
Luzira also stands out because of its access to important public facilities and services.
One notable institution is Bethany Hospital, located on Kabalega Crescent, a respected and well-equipped medical facility known for its specialization in fertility and gynecology.
The neighborhood also has petrol stations such as TotalEnergies, as well as wellness facilities like Honeypot Beauty and Spa on Kome Crescent Road, which offers spa and hair services.

Another important institution is Luzira Prison. Some people may find it strange to consider a prison a positive feature of a neighborhood, but my perspective is different.
While living in Burundi, I began practicing karate. After moving to Kampala, I wanted to continue training, and it was in Luzira Prison that I found one of the most active martial arts communities in the city. The prison hosts clubs dedicated to karate, taekwondo, judo, and other disciplines. I eventually joined the karate sessions there myself — yes, I know a few katas, so be careful.
The prison complex also contains a gym open to civilians. Despite common stereotypes associated with penitentiary facilities, Luzira Prison is surprisingly organized and community-oriented. The compound is vast, open toward the lake, and includes religious buildings, training centers, sports grounds, housing, and recreational spaces, all within a thoughtfully designed environment.
Controlled Nightlife and Residential Calm
One issue I have consistently noticed in Kampala is excessive noise caused by nightlife establishments such as bars, lounges, and clubs. Even neighborhoods considered upscale, such as Kololo or Naguru, can become extremely noisy at night.
Luzira is different.
The neighborhood was clearly designed with residential life in mind. Despite hosting the Uganda Breweries facilities, the area remains remarkably calm and peaceful.
The main nightlife spots, such as Samaki Beach and Floating Island, are both located toward the end of Peninsula Road, facing the lake and situated away from residential homes. This creates a balance where entertainment exists without disrupting the daily life of residents.
Conclusion
For all these reasons, I would choose Luzira over and over again as the best neighborhood in Kampala.
At a time when urban development is often reduced to the construction of large buildings without adequate attention to livability, green spaces, or residential wellbeing, Luzira offers a different model, one that prioritizes balance, calmness, accessibility, and quality of life. It is a model of urban living that deserves to be preserved, and replicated elsewhere.
